Kobre & Kim’s Nicholas Surmacz will speak at the 22nd Annual IBA Anti-Corruption Conference: The Role of the Global Financial System in the Fight Against Corruption on 18 June 2026, joining Panel Six: Asset recovery and restitution: The challenges of returning illicit gains to victims and states.
Chaired by Wendell Wong of Drew & Napier (Singapore), the session will bring together Mark Morrison KC of Blake Cassels & Graydon (Canada), Clarissa Oliveira of Oliveira Estefam Becker e Capalbo (Brazil), and Ros Prince of Stephenson Harwood (UK) to examine how restitution frameworks are evolving in response to the practical and political complexities of asset recovery.
The discussion will focus on approaches ranging from post-conviction proceedings to negotiated returns, and how competing sovereign claims, geopolitical constraints, and the need for meaningful reparation shape outcomes in cross-border matters. Drawing on recent case studies, panelists will also explore how claimants can more effectively position themselves to recover assets—whether by leveraging parallel proceedings, engaging with state actors, or structuring recovery strategies to align with public enforcement priorities.
Nicholas will share perspectives on navigating these issues in complex, multi-jurisdictional disputes, including how parties can use evolving restitution tools to advance recovery outcomes.
