With recent macroeconomic and policy developments in Greater China and other parts of Asia, distressed credit investors have been in search of new opportunities across regions and sectors. Kobre & Kim’s John Han, who often serves as lead counsel monetizing claims related to Greater China and India for distressed credit investors, shared his insights on current opportunities at the Debtwire APAC Forum on October 10, 2023.

During the panel, “Asia Distressed: Finding Opportunities Amid Dislocation,” the panelists discussed special situation opportunities, beyond China real estate, and the various headwinds and tailwinds facing opportunity sets, including fixed income in India, Japan, Vietnam, and other regions in Asia. Mr. Han in particular delved into ‘Plan B’ in these types of situations, opaque corporate holding structures, and cross-border legal regimes.

The panel also featured Kurkye Wong of Argyle Street Management Limited, Beaux Pontak of Deutsche Bank, Jocelyn Chi of Kroll, and Graham Price of Weil, Gotshal & Manges.

Mr. Han regularly advises investors pre-trade, leads contentious special projects in restructuring, and leads global teams on cross-border activist campaigns. He has deep experience penetrating vulnerabilities across complex offshore and onshore holding structures, focusing on decision makers, and executing on strategies in Asia. His commentaries on distressed scenarios and special situations have been cited in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Financial Times.
