In a recent interview with Law360 marking his start at the firm, Kobre & Kim’s Michael Sherwin, a former top U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutor, explained the reasons for his move to private practice from prosecution to defense, as well as the global trends this move allows him to capitalize on.

“Kobre & Kim does very sophisticated, high-end work, it has a large geographic footprint and it's set up an architecture for a conflict-free environment. It's more nimble, as speed is more critical in these complicated cases,” Mr. Sherwin said. The move also comes at an opportune time, he explained, as DOJ enforcement is set to increase due to influxes of federal money and the inevitable fraud that follows.

Mr. Sherwin also sees Kobre & Kim’s pending launch of its Dubai office, which he will be involved in, as capitalizing on another trend of the global financial system’s power centers shifting to the Persian Gulf, accelerated by the diplomatic thaw in the region. Mr. Sherwin will handle financial fraud investigations arising from the modernization of the “antiquated” financial systems in the region, which he said is “going to be unique work and very interesting work, and few firms are going to be able to address those legal issues.”
