A new framework between six antitrust agencies in five countries, including the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission, “confirms the increasingly cross-border nature of antitrust enforcement,” Kobre & Kim’s Benjamin Sirota told Compliance Week.
The Multilateral Mutual Assistance and Cooperation Framework for Competition Authorities aims to boost cooperation and information sharing between antitrust agencies in the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Besides acknowledging the international nature of antitrust cases, this agreement also recognizes the need “to obtain evidence in foreign jurisdictions,” Sirota indicated.
“It also demonstrates that, despite their substantive differences, the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division and Federal Trade Commission will continue to act in tandem on broad matters of process,” he added.
