William McGovern Discusses U.S. Enforcement Against Tax Evaders and Potential Risks in Asia
March 18, 2015
William McGovern, member of the firm’s Government Enforcement Defense team in Hong Kong, presented to a group of wealth managers and tax planners an update on recent U.S. enforcement relating to tax evasion and what could be next for Asia. On the panel titled “As FATCA turns up the heat, will Asia based financial intermediaries get burned?,” Mr. McGovern discussed issues related to the implementation of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), particularly in the context of the U.S. government’s pursuit of tax evaders globally, and the implications for tax-related professional services providers in Asia. In addition, Mr. McGovern highlighted the tools available to the U.S. government to identify offshore tax evasions and the types of conduct that could lead to an investigation.
