Rebecca Hume on Cross-Cultural Considerations in Global Insolvencies

May 20, 2020

Insolvencies and restructuring transactions are increasingly cross-border, involving a mix of stakeholders from different backgrounds and cultures. Understanding and being sensitive to these different cultures can oftentimes be key to success, as Kobre & Kim’s Rebecca Hume will discuss at an International Women's Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC) panel on May 21st at 7am ET / 12p BST.

During the webinar, titled “Global deal-making: Cultural Considerations,” Hume will join a group of other lawyers with relevant insolvency and restructuring experience to discuss how cultural-specific perspectives affect debt restructurings and advantages for creditors or debtors. In particular, Hume will speak from her experience working in the Cayman Islands, looking at how courts there favor creditors and investors and are adept at insolvency matters with nexuses to multiple parts of the world.

In addition, Hume will also discuss the effects of stereotypes, walk through some examples where cultural dynamics have affected a negotiation, and discuss the how gender, language and a firm’s multijurisdictional presence can affect communications and network-building.
