Martin De Luca on Market Integrity and Investor Protection in Islamic Finance
September 7, 2022
Brazil has seen exponential growth in investments from the Middle East, primarily in the agriculture sector given Brazil’s position as the largest exporter of halal meats to the Middle East. Despite Brazil’s growth as a center for Islamic finance, investors should be cautious of fraudulent or non-Shariah compliant investments.
On September 6, 2022, Kobre & Kim’s Martin De Luca spoke at a panel at the 39th International Symposium on Economic Crime at the University of Cambridge. Mr. De Luca discussed the precautionary measures Middle Eastern investors should take to avoid getting bogged down in endless litigation in Brazilian courts arising out of fraudulent or non-Shariah law compliant investments. He walked the audience through the steps foreign investors can take to mitigate such risks, concluding that despite the risks, Brazil remains an attractive market for Islamic finance outside the Muslim world.
