Calvin Koo Discusses Blockchain Technology and Arbitration in 6th CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration

March 29, 2022

As blockchain-related technologies – including cryptocurrency and smart contracts – proliferate, related disputes will grow as well, many of which will have to be resolved through arbitration. However, blockchain arbitrations remain rare, and unprecedented challenges may arise. Kobre & Kim’s Calvin Koo, who focuses on APAC digital assets disputes, will discuss these issues during the 6th CARTAL Conference on International Arbitration in a virtual panel at 5:00 pm India time / 7:30 pm Hong Kong time, April 1, 2022.

The panel, “Blockchain Technology and Arbitration,” will examine how blockchain will become increasingly relevant to arbitrations, the types of disputes that will arise and issues that may appear in the future. This includes smart contracts – self-executing contracts expressing the terms in code – potentially limiting the scope of disputes; the legal status of smart contracts; and issues related to owning, seizing, freezing and enforcing against cryptocurrencies.

Joining Mr. Koo are Santiago Rodriguez of Uría Menéndez Abogados, S.L.P.; Dr. Sara Hourani of Middlesex University; and Shilpa Mankar Ahluwalia of Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co.

CARTAL (Centre for Advanced Research and Training in Arbitration Law) is part of the National Law University, Jodhpur, and publishes the Indian Journal of Arbitration Law.
