Matthew Menchel Named Litigator of the Week

November 6, 2014

Publication: The American Lawyer

Kobre & Kim would like to congratulate Matthew Menchel and Freshfields' Aaron Marcu on being named "Litigators of the Week" by The American Lawyer.

In a major victory for the defense team, Raoul Weil, the highest-ranking Swiss banker to stand trial in the U.S., was acquitted by a federal jury on charges of conspiring with wealthy Americans to hide US $20 billion in secret offshore accounts. Jurors deliberated for just more than an hour after the closing arguments, before returning the "not guilty" verdict for the former UBS executive.

Mr. Menchel offered an explanation of the defense team’s winning strategy: "The trial really turned on eviscerating and undermining the credibility of the government's witnesses." According to the article, the defense team let the case go to the jury on Nov. 3 without calling a witness to the stand and “pulled off a stunning defense victory.”
